Coloured and laminated clays

with Steve Mattison

27 - 30 September, 2021
course fee: 140,000 huf.

The Spirit of Place is a tangible physical aspect of the environment, the invisible weave of culture and our deep personal relationship with a place.

It is the knowledge and experience of a particular place that generations have given each other, a rich relationship with the landscape of our birth. It refers to the fleeting moments of passing time - a place or the time which we instinctively belong to or feel most connected. Our home-place.

My work is a reflection of this spirit of place. One which demands to feel the meaning of what we are doing and to celebrate that meaning, to unite the artists’ internal philosophy with the development of the materials and conditions available – this is when my works are created.

Steve will be demonstrating the techniques that he has developed over 30 years of working with clay.

The course begins at 11.00 EU time each day. (10.00 UK time)

COURSE FEE: 140,000 huf

Course content

You will learn a variety of surface techniques using coloured clay, slips and stains to make intricate and expressive surfaces evocative of landscape and natural patterns.

Hand-building techniques, including using moulds and formers, will be demonstrated to create sculptural forms or functional objects enhanced by rich coloured and textural surface decoration.

Working alongside Steve, in your own studios, there will be time to make several pieces using combinations of these techniques.

Course format

The course will be held via Zoom. You will need a laptop computer or an iPad connected to the internet. You will need a Broadband connection with a reasonable speed to fully involve yourself in the course.

The course will begin with an introduction to Steve and his work.

Following the daily demonstrations there will be group and individual tutorials where you can discuss the progress of your own work with the teacher. There will be plenty of time to discuss the work with other participants.
