3 - 12 September, 2024
course fee: 550,000 HUF.
This course will introduce several different techniques for a sculpting hollow animal forms in paper clay. Pinch, coil, dowel and throw will be maximized and minimized to create a range of animal subjects. Each unique approach will bring a different quality to your interpretation, the aim to show that techniques have a voice and play a vital role in the final appearance of your sculpture. Adapting pottery forming techniques allows for speed and ease of making, no internal armatures or hollowing out. I'll show you some unique construction methods and successful ways to support your work while you make.
Basic animal anatomy will be discussed as this knowledge should underpin all our thinking. However, it is not the goal to make super realistic creatures, but to capture more of the spirit, vigour and nature of the beast.
Pieces will be speed dried for bisque firing over the weekend so we can smoke, raku and wood fire on the last days. We will also work with a palette of slips with the option to 'decorate' and colour your sculpture before firing. Bring a sketchbook for drawing ideas and developing designs.
The workshop language will be English.
Susan writes . . .
"My obsession with animals and animal imagery has been more or less constant since my childhood so it is right that they should be the dominant subject in my work. It seems right and the most honest creative front available. I do believe that part of my drive to make animals is tied up in the primitive need to posses them – like effigies and totems.
In my sculpture I’m trying to create an image which traps a kind of animal truth. Direct representation does not interest me. I strive to create work which reinvents animal form, enhancing the facts without being slavish to mere appearance. Dog, Horse, Bird, Pig, Sheep and Goat are recurring themes."
Susan Halls received her MA in Ceramics from The Royal College of Art, London, UK.
